The Leadership Academy for Middle Managers is a leadership training and development process designed by the UNC-Chapel Hill, School of Social Work's Middle Space team to enhance the ability of national middle managers and supervisors in child welfare to initiate and support organizational transformations that lead to sustainable system change and improved outcomes for children, families, and communities. The Leadership Academy's approach is based on research and evidence and builds on current leadership and adult learning theories as well as evaluation data and best practices. The design, development and the implementation of this distributive, adaptive, and inclusive child welfare leadership training model for supervisors and mid-managers complements existing workforce and professional development initiatives in the field and promotes transfer of learning to the workplace.
"I have already started to implement the skills with my supervisors and they love it. I have learned that I must take care of myself and try to not to solve adaptive issues with technical solutions. I am thankful that I was able to attend and all of you did a superb job at delivering the information."

"This training has touched on those pieces not often taught in training - the intangibles of what's behind doing the work. The training fit what is happening in child welfare today."

"The training as delivered was inspirational and commanded action and change to the manner in which we as middle managers functioned. There was an excellent balance of activity and information that truly facilitated an amazing learning experience. Thanks to all of you who were members of the UNC-Chapel Hill LAMM team: Deb and Chris were truly an exemplary training team."

"In my 28 years in child welfare, I'd be hard pressed to find training as valuable as was the Leadership Academy training provided by UNC staff in New York last month. The training was exciting and relevant and perfectly fit MY needs as a middle manager in child welfare. Deb and Chris who provided the bulk of the training--are some of the most knowledgeable and genuine professionals I have ever been trained by; you all have truly inspired us perhaps more than you realize."
