Barbara is the Executive Director of the PTA Thrift Shop, Inc. which is a Green Plus certified non-profit organization located in Carrboro and Chapel Hill, NC. She has previous non-profit business experience as co-founder of OneVoice Institute of Business Entrepreneurship, Inc, located in Durham, NC and Belk, Inc. located in Charlotte, NC. She has served on multiple boards in the community including the Chapel Hill Carrboro Chamber of Commerce and the UNC Health Care Systems. She has also chaired the Institute of Sustainable Development affiliated with UNC and Duke. Barbara earned her MBA in general business from Meredith College (NC).
Carl Baumann
Carl is retired and is a SCORE mentor, counseling small businesses and non-profits. He coaches in SoftLaunch and Launching the Ventures programs at the Kenan-Flagler Business School which assists entrepreneurs in starting commercial and social enterprises. He possesses experience in business & strategic planning, management, finance, and accounting, having worked for First-Citizens Bank and Miller Brewing Company. Carl teaches business planning and other business seminars for SCORE and has been a guest lecturer on sustainable development and social enterprise at the UNC School of Social Work. Carl earned his BSBA from UNC-CH and his EMBA (Executive Masters of Business Administration) from the Peter Drucker Graduate School of Management at Claremont Graduate University.
David Harris
David started his practice, David W. Harris Company, CPAs, in 1984. He has worked with non-profits in the past and currently specializes in individual tax preparation, planning and analysis services. David attended Wake Forest University and is a graduate of Oakland University with a B.S. degree in Management. Over the past thirty years, he has worked with individuals, private companies, and non-profits to plan for successful futures. As a member of Saint Francis United Methodist church, he has served on the finance committee and helped plan for growth. David and his wife, Jean, live near Raleigh with their two daughters. Enjoying quiet family time at the coast is a favorite activity.
Elizabeth Benefield
Elizabeth has previous experience at the School of Social Work where she served for over nine years as the school's first Director of Development. While there she co-wrote the book “Building A Strong Foundation: Fundraising for Nonprofits.” For the past fifteen years she has worked as an independent fundraising consultant, most recently establishing the Rosie Group to focus on nurturing creative new philanthropic alliances across sector lines. She is an active volunteer with the New Voices Foundation, WUNC, and regional social entrepreneurship activities.
Tom Stevens
Tom is presently the Mayor of Hillsborough. He also operates a successful leadership consulting business, Esquare Leadership LLC. He is a graduate of our School of Social Work and was the former director of Family Counseling Services of Durham. He serves on the Board of the Raleigh-Durham Chapter of the Association for Corporate Growth.
